Palmyra consists of a circular string of about 26 islets nestled among several lagoons and encircled by 15,000 acres of shallow turquoise reefs and deep blue. Atolls develop over a period of millions of years from sunken volcanic islands, when reefs build up around a crater. An atoll is a round coral reef that has a lagoon inside it.
